A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system, commonly affecting the bladder. Uncomplicated UTIs typically involve the bladder.

Common Symptoms:

• Frequent urge to urinate

• Burning sensation while urinating

• Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

• Lower abdominal pain or discomfort

Treatment Options:

• Antibiotics 

• Pain relievers to alleviate discomfort

*Pharmacists can assess and prescribe, where appropriate, for UTIs in female individuals. Since bladder infections are less common in males, males with symptoms should be assessed by a physician or nurse practictioner. 

Cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex virus, are small, painful blisters that appear on or around the lips.

Common Symptoms:

• Tingling or burning sensation before the blisters appear

• Fluid-filled blisters on the lips or near the mouth

• Pain, itching, or tenderness

Treatment Options:

• Antiviral medications (oral or topical) to reduce symptoms if taken at the onset.

• Over-the-counter creams for pain relief or to ease discomfort.

Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander.

Common Symptoms:

• Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose

• Itchy or watery eyes

• Nasal congestion or pressure in the sinuses

• Postnasal drip or throat irritation

• Mild to major congestion

• Antihistamines to alleviate symptoms

• Nasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation

Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that causes red sores or blisters. It often occurs in children.

Common Symptoms:

• Red sores or blisters that rupture and form a yellowish crust

• The fluid dries to a crust that is golden or honey coloured

• Itching and pain around the sores

Treatment Options:

• Antibiotic creams or ointments applied to the affected area

• In severe cases, oral antibiotics may be prescribed

Dermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin, often resulting from an allergic reaction or irritation due to contact with irritants.

Common Symptoms:

• Redness, itching, or swelling of the skin.

• Dry, cracked, or scaly skin.

• Blistering or oozing (in severe cases).

Treatment Options:

• Topical corticosteroids or antihistamine creams for relief

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, are raised, itchy welts on the skin that appear due to an allergic reaction.

Common Symptoms:

• Raised, red or skin-colored welts

• Itching, burning, or stinging sensation

• Swelling of affected areas

Note: Severe reactions to insect stings are a medical emergency and immediate treatment should be sought or administered. People who know they have severe reactions should carry an epinephrine auto-injector.

• Antihistamines to relieve itching and reduce swelling

• Apply cold compresses or calamine lotion for comfort.

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, itching, or bleeding.

Common Symptoms:

• Pain, itching, or discomfort around the anal region

• Bleeding during bowel movements

• Swelling or a lump near the anus

• Over-the-counter creams or ointments for pain relief and reducing inflammation

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstrual cramps experienced by some women before or during their periods.

• Cramping pain in the lower abdomen lasting 2-3 days

• Backache or upper thigh pain

• Nausea, vomiting, or headaches (in severe cases)

GERD is a digestive disorder causing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus, leading to a burning sensation in the chest known as heartburn.

• Burning sensation in the chest or throat

• Acidic taste in the mouth

• Difficulty swallowing or chronic cough (in severe cases)

• Over-the-counter antacids or acid reducers for symptom relief

• Prescription medications or lifestyle changes in severe or chronic cases

Oral thrush is a fungal infection caused by Candida yeast, resulting in white lesions on the tongue, inner cheeks, or throat.

Common Symptoms:

• Creamy white lesions on the tongue, inner cheeks, or roof of the mouth

• Redness or soreness in the affected areas

• Difficulty swallowing or altered taste sensation

• Unpleasant taste or fuzzy feeling in the mouth

• Cracked or dry corners of the lips or mouth
